Toilet Paper Cake

In these times of toilet paper hoarding, what better way to celebrate a birthday in quarantine than with a little TP cake! [Note: No actual toilet paper was sacrificed in the making of this cake.] This post is limited to assembling the cake. The recipe for the cake that I used is available at http://www.cookingupjustice.com/pineapple-upside-down-cupcakes. The time listed is just for the assembly of the cake. This is my very first attempt at using fondant. I also had limited items given we are still in quarantine, and I could not get food-coloring. So I improvised using decorating icing. Here is my “latexed glove picking up the toilet paper roll” cake.

Ingredients

  • Store-bought fondant

  • Store-bought decorating icing in black

  • Store-bought decorating icing in purple

  • Top of a roll of paper towels, cut into a 1/2 in piece

Directions

  • Assemble your cake. You can use two round layer cakes, but because I wanted the dimensions to look more like a roll of toilet paper, I assembled cupcakes into the shape of a roll of toilet paper. I made three rows of 7 columns, or 21 uniced cupcakes and squeezed them together to get the right shape.
  • Once your cake is assembled, take a string and cut it to be the length of two sides and the top of the cake. I found it was easier to use a string than a ruler, but you can use a ruler, too. Put your string to the side for now.
  • Make sure your surface is clean and clear of any crumbs. Roll out the fondant into a thin layer. Keep rolling it out until it is thin, about 1/2 inch thick. Then take your string to make sure the piece is large enough to fit over the cake.
  • Carefully use your rolling pin to pick up the fondant and place it over the center of the cake. I took one piece and folded it to be like toilet paper. Then with the rest of the fondant, I made a tight seal at the bottom. I then used a knife to cut the fondant. Do not discard the fondant. You will need it for the latex glove.
  • I then cut a 1/2 inch piece of paper towel roll and placed it in the center of the cake.
  • Using black decorating icing, I made lines to look like the preforation of toilet paper. (See note). This could be the end of the cake, but then my kids wanted to decorate it, so we kept going.
  • After my kids went a little too crazy with the sprinkles disguising that it was a toilet paper cake, I had to improvise, which is where I got the idea for the latex glove. But because I had no food coloring, I used the purple decorating icing to color the fondant. We kneaded the purple icing into the fondant until it became the color of latex exam glove. Be careful, too much kneading, and the fondant will get super soft. I then rolled it out, placed my non-dominant hand in the center, and used my dominant hand to cut out the outline of my hand. Then I placed the glove on the top of the cake.

Notes

  • I never have luck with the icing containers for writing. This time, as I was looking for the plastic tips to use for the icing, I came across a baby medicine dropper. I decided to try it. It was so much easier to use for writing “Happy Birthday” than those plastic tips.
