Just in time for Labor Day, try this fresh fall BBQ sauce adding real apples. It comes together in just 20 minutes as you are cooking your protein. Add the protein into the sauce at the last minute. You can make it sugar-free if you want to cut down on your carbohydrates. Either way, it’s a great fall BBQ sauce!
Apple BBQ Sauce

2 Fuji apples, diced
1 cup ketchup (I used sugar-free, but you can use whatever you wish)
1/3 cup brown sugar (I used Truvia brown sugar alternative)
1/2 unsweetened applesauce
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup apple cider
1 TBS minced garlic (about 3 cloves)
1 TBS freeze-dried shallots
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp liquid smoke
1/2 tsp salt
Directions
- Add all ingredients to a medium-sized sauce pan.
- Stir well. Turn heat to medium and begin to cook down the sauce.
- Bring to a simmer. Cook for about 15 to 20 minutes until sauce reduces.
- Use immersion blender to puree the diced apples.
- Once sauce has come together, you can either add in your protein (I used pork), or you can serve on the side.
Notes
- If you don’t have an immersion blender, you can either enjoy it chunky or use a regular blender. Blend in batches. To avoid splattering and injuring yourself, only fill half-way. Remove the center feeder cap from the blender lid. Cover with a kitchen towel while blending.
